It seems the COVID-19 pandemic had at least one positive outcome: Many shelters found themselves emptied of pets as homebound pet lovers stepped up to adopt and foster pets.

Fostering especially saw a big uptick, with many people fostering pets for the very first, but hopefully not last, time. Best Friends Animal Society conducted a survey of 321 participants who fostered pets during the COVID-19 quarantine and discovered the following:

  • 43% were fostering for the first time
  • 75% were extremely satisfied with their fostering experience
  • 95% facilitated an adoption or were working with prospective adopters
  • 80% think the greatest impact of fostering is expanding the capacity to save lives
